Etihad Airways (IATA Airline Code – EY) announced that their new first class apartment featured on the new Airbus A380 just won its first design award at the Society of British and International Design (SBID) Awards held in 2014 in London.
The airline only entered the category of Best Entertainment Space but its designers Acumen Design Associates ended with award of 2014 Overall Winner instead.
The First Apartment features a complete re-imagination of the classic enclosed suite design pioneered by Singapore Airlines (SQ) and Emirates Airlines (EK). It has an enclosed space of 39 square feet, with a separate arm chair and an ottoman that can be extended into an 81 inch lie flat bed. Etihad is placing 9 of these First Class Apartments in the upper deck of the A380 (Refer to seatmap).
Here is a video of the apartment:
At 39 square feet, the First Apartment has a 50% bigger footprint than comparable first class seats featured in other airlines’ A380s. For example, competitors SQ and EK have an approximate footprint of 19.7 and 13.7 square feet for their first class seat (calculated from information on Seatguru.com – pitch * width / 144)*.
We will do an in-depth comparison review of first class seats from all airlines operating the Airbus A380 once Etihad has flown its first flight scheduled for December 27, 2014 from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH).
