One of the biggest challenges for travellers of foreign countries is how to get from point A to B in the most efficient and economical way possible. Research on different options often lead to travellers spending hours on bus, car rental, trains and airlines’ websites. GoEuro aims to make this experience better with a one-stop shop approach.
One of its founder, Naren Shaam, was on a backpacking trip through Europe when he discovered there was no easy way for him to economically find the best route navigating between different destinations. This was the inspiration behind the birth of the Berlin based company.
Here are some key facts about the company:
The company has offices in 7 countries and partnerships that spans its reach to over 30k destinations around the world. While passengers can use this tool to plan travel worldwide, its search results are most effective within Europe. For other destinations, travellers are better off using tools like Kayak or Google Flight (refer to our easy tutorial on how to maximize searches on Google Flight here).
The front page of the website has a single design and is available in the following languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch and Polish.
Currently the website allows for searches based on a round trip or one way itinerary. It also advertised that it is “Optimised for UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and now also for Switzerland”.
For this review, we decided to complete the following searches:
- One Way from London, UK to Frankfurt, Germany
- Roundtrip from Paris, France to Istanbul, Turkey
- Roundtrip from Brussels, Belgium to Amsterdam, Netherlands
One Way from London, UK to Frankfurt, Germany on July 28, 2015
Observation – Once the cities were inputted, a discount pane appeared intelligently prompting the travellers to enter train discount card information for UK or Germany. Also, the Airbnb option is available which will transfer passengers to the accommodation booking site.
Search resulted in options for flights (US$230.10, 3h52m), car rental US$94.19 – 8h9m and bus (US$124.17, 13h30m) but no train service. The results can be filtered based on the following paths – smartest, cheapest, fastest, departure and arrival times. Travellers can also sort results by mode of transportation.
Once the traveller picks the option, he/she can book the ticket by pressing the “Book” button which will transfer to Skyscanner or specific bus company/airline.
Observation – We found it interesting that the website could not find train options. As a comparsion, we were able to find an itinerary separately on the popular train website Rail Europe.
Both flight and car rental prices were similar to those noted on Kayak and Google Flight.
Roundtrip from Paris, France to Istanbul, Turkey
For Paris to Istanbul, we noted that the Airbnb option appeared after we inputted the cities.
Only flight options available for this particular itinerary which is what we expected since car rental, bus and train options may take too long and/or require significant number of changes.
Roundtrip from Brussels, Belgium to Amsterdam, Netherlands
After inputting the information, we noted both the Airbnb and discount card options appeared.
This search not surprising yielded the best results are the city pairs are within the advertised optimization list. It is very interesting that the bus option is the cheapest and would take less time than the train.
The mobile application for both iOS and Android platforms have the same useful interface but lacks the options for include train discount cards or Airbnb search options.
- Many language and currency options available
- Unique consolidated view between different modes of transportation which made it easier for passengers to pick the most economical option
- Prices shown are comparable to other tools and utilize appropriate discount options for trains
- Good integration with partners to create a seamless experience
- Optimization is limited to 7 countries currently which limits the consolidated search results
- Mobile application do not have the same options as the website
- Some train options may not appear
Overall – Recommended
This tool provides a consolidated view that is unique and not widely available in other travel booking tools. If you are travelling in the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and/or Switzerland, this tool is perfectly designed for you.
The company continues to add European countries on its optimization list to further enhance passenger experience.
