Airline

Strikes are never great for airlines as it impacts them in the following areas:

1. Finance – lost of revenue from all the cancelled flights will hit bottom line (e.g. Air France’s last strike costed them more than 600 million US$.

2. Reputation –  lost of confidence from customers due to cancelled flight might deter them from booking future flights on LH

3. Regulator – the government may have to step in and moderate discussion and contract negotiation. This might further impact the relationship between the union and the airline.

Update – February 20, 2015

Lufthansa reported that the November and December 2014 strike costed the airline  Euro 62 million and will not pay a dividend for 2014. It full year earnings were also impacted by the sale of the IT Infrastructure segment, an increase in pension liabilities and losses from fuel-hedging activities.

Update – March 20, 2015

In its fourth day of the current pilot strike, LH has cancelled 74 out of 160 international flights affecting 20,000 passengers. It would be a good idea for passengers to check their flights before they head to the airport.
