Airlines ground 6,365 flights as new work week begins – This will create havoc for Mid West and Eastern US cities like Detroit (DTW), Chicago (MDW and ORD), New York (JFK, LGA and EWR), Boston (BOS). Passengers return from Super Bowl in Phoenix (PHX) will experience delays. Check with airlines for flight status updates and cancellation policy. When it comes to weather related cancellations, regional flights using smaller planes like Q400, ERJ145 / 170 / 190 or CRJ 200 / 700 / 900 would be more affected than international flights.
Lufthansa welcomes brand-new jumbo to Frankfurt – The famous German airline (LH) is receiving its 16th Boeing 747-8 aircraft (Check link for more info) and will be replacing an older Boeing 747-400 with this Queen of the Skies jumbo jet on its Frankfurt (FRA) to New York (Newark) (EWR) (LH402/403) route starting February 23. The upside is that Business Class would feature the new lie flat design (instead of the less comfortable angled flat design). The downside is that the current seat and bed combo featured in the 747-400’s First Class cabin would be replaced with a only-seat design.

SkyTeam Officially Opens Exclusive Lounge at Sydney Airport – This will the first SkyTeam lounge in the Southern Hemisphere (third for the entire alliance). London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport (IST) are the other two airports featuring this unique design.
Etihad Airways Introduces the Boeing 787-9 into Commercial Service – Following United Airlines (UA), All Nippon Airways (NH), Air New Zealand (NZ), Virgin Atlantic Airways (VS), Etihad Airways (EY) is starting service on its first Boeing 787-9. The aircraft will be deployed on its Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Düsseldorf (DUS) route. Check the info-graphic below for flight facts and path.
Singapore Airlines And Vistara Launch Frequent Flyer Programme Partnership – Following the introduction of Vistara (UK) (a joint venture between Singapore Airlines (SQ)) and Tata Group, the Southeast Asian airline announced both airlines will have earning and redeeming opportunities starting in March and May 2015 respectively. This will provide additional access to Indian flights for SQ’s KrisFlyer and UK’s Club Vistara members. Check our own blog entry about Air India (AI), UK and the Indian aviation market.
